Position: Volunteer Board Member 

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

About Us:

JAYU is a vibrant, award-winning charitable organization based in Toronto that utilizes the power of the arts to tell compelling human rights stories. With a focus on youth engagement, we amplify voices from around the world, weaving together narratives that inspire empathy, understanding, and positive social change. 

Role Overview:

Our dedicated Board of Directors  meets every six to eight weeks (approximately 6-8 times/year), working collaboratively to support the oversight and governance of the organization, while also passionately advocating for our mission. As a Board Member at JAYU, you will play a role in shaping the organization’s strategic direction and contributing to the impactful work we do. Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Oversight: Collaborate with fellow board members to provide strategic direction and oversight, ensuring the organization's mission is effectively pursued.

  • Governance Support: Contribute to the governance structure of the organization, providing insights and guidance to maintain a robust and ethical framework.

  • Advocacy and Outreach: Act as ambassadors for JAYU, actively promoting our events and programs to expand our reach and impact.

  • Community Engagement: Embrace and celebrate individual experiences, fostering an inclusive environment that values diverse perspectives and backgrounds.

  • Time Commitment: Attend regular board meetings, participate in subcommittees (as applicable), and dedicate additional time to support organizational initiatives. Approximately 4-6 hours a month. Terms are 2 years in length. 

  • Financial Commitment: It is preferred that all Board members are also donors to JAYU; however no one will be turned away from this position based on their ability to donate.

About You:

We are seeking individuals who are collaborative strategic thinkers, ideally with legal, accounting, youth-programming and/or community-organizing expertise. Most importantly our ideal candidates share a deep understanding of and passion for the arts, youth empowerment, storytelling, and human rights issues whether through lived, educational, or professional experience. This position requires active participation in meetings and a commitment to spreading the word about our mission, events and programs, especially within communities of equity-deserving youth and/or across prospective participants and supporters.

  • Strategic mindset or demonstrated experience in strategic planning and implementation. 

  • In-depth knowledge and passion for navigating the complex nuances of  human rights

  • Connections within / familiar with Toronto’s rich and dynamic arts & culture ecosystem.

  • Strong commitment to youth engagement and art development programs

  • Ability to contribute actively to meetings and organizational activities.

  • Experience in advocacy and community engagement.

  • Embraces diversity and inclusion, and supports equity-deserving communities.
