Job Description:

Are you interested in mentoring youth in the arts? Are you passionate about advancing social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in the arts? Do you have experience producing music and want to share your knowledge? 

JAYU is looking for a music program facilitator as part of our iAM Program. The iAM Program is a year-round arts and professional development program specializing in programs for poetry, photography, painting and more. This will be the first iAM Music program we’ve offered. In this role, you’ll be responsible for helping to develop a beginner-friendly music production program, and delivering the program to equity-deserving youth ages 12-29. The program will be held once a week for up to 8 weeks, hosted from the JAYU studio at 401 Richmond Street West in studio 380.  

Hiring for this position will prioritize youth (up to 35 years old) and equity-deserving groups. Equity-deserving is inclusive of Black and racialized folks, people with disabilities, Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and Métis), 2-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Trans and Queer (2SLGBTQ+), newcomers to Canada and people experiencing homelessness.

 

 

Scope of Work:

  • Plan and deliver each workshop for 5-15 youth by piloting a new program book that can be replicated by other facilitators

  • Curriculum should include but not be limited to: the foundations of music production, how it can be used as a tool to express stories of human rights and social justice, opportunities for professional development and information on the industry outside of the program, etc.

  • Facilitate course using the following equipment: Ableton Lite or Garageband for iPad, iPad 10.2, AKAI Mini, and Arturia MiniFuse 1

  • Adapt program depending on participant accessibility and learning needs 

  • Responsible for coordinating a guest speaker for one of the sessions (if desired)

  • Work with guest speakers (as they are booked) for the delivery of each workshop 

  • Ensure that each youth is prepared and equipped to submit a final assignment for graduation (one 1-2 minute song)

  • Meet with Junior Mentors in weeks ahead of program to coordinate roles and curriculum

  • Follow up weekly with the iAM Program Manager with regard to planning, workshop debrief, concerns, guest speakers, and any other details related to the program 

  • Assist in the promotion of the program on social media and your your network

  • Provide feedback about the program 

  • Ensure youth complete equipment sign-out forms, and registration/media consent forms

  • When in person, ensure the opening and closing duties of studio space, or program partner’s spaces are completed, with Junior Mentors

  • Manage emails to correspond with youth participants and Junior Mentors during the workshops and outside of workshop hours.

What is Needed:

  • Professional background in music production

  • Fluent in Ableton and/or Garageband

  • Experience teaching or mentoring youth, artists, and/or community members

  • Organized, responsive, and able to manage time and deadlines

  • Adaptable and understanding of the needs of a growing organization. Open to thinking proactively and working towards finding solutions to big challenges.

  • Enthusiasm and commitment to equity, the arts, working with/in diverse communities, and human rights

  • Flexibility to adapt programming to tech availabilities, participant needs 

  • Be based in the GTA (or able to travel) to attend weekly programming with access to a personal laptop and high-speed internet

  • Identifies with an equity-deserving group

 

 

Nice to Have:

  • Experience teaching music production and developing curriculum

  • Active participant in a network of musicians and music producers in the GTA

  • Experience and/or knowledge of JAYU and the iAM Program

 

 

What Can Be Learned:

  • JAYU uses Google Workspace, Basecamp, Mailchimp, Keela, Canva, Squarespace and Adobe Suite, but you don’t need to have experience on these specific platforms.

  • ​Understanding and knowledge of JAYU’s programs, values, mission, and working culture.
