“El pequeño de Baja mar...” show us what is never often shared

36x36 in on wood panel

Growing up and living in The Bahamas, there's only so much the island life can provide its people. In this piece, Alia follows the life of Desmondo Bootle, el pequeño de BajaMar. By use of unique textures and placement of her elements, Alia illustrates an organized chaos of Desmondos timeline. With the intentional childlike characteristics of some aspects in the painting, Alia is preserving the youthful aspect of the piece as a whole. It follows Desmondo, from child to adult, living a life full of accomplishments and happiness.

Alia is a Bahamian-Colombian artist currently based in Toronto.
Her work is translated through the use of colour schemes, patterns and fabrics reminiscent of her childhood; bringing to life, memories once suppressed. Using painting, sculptures and installations, Alia can portray scenes in her past or that of others, while in a sense re-learning herself through a past once forgotten, it’s engagement with her mental health and the relationship with her two cultures.
