Stories of our Lives
Lost love, secrets revealed, an unrequited crush on a straight friend, a one-night stand and the constant stress of fearing for one’s life can happen anywhere, but in Stories of Our Lives these experiences are specific to the queer Kenyans who live them. Homophobia in African countries such as Kenya has become a topic of monumental concern, but missing too often from that conversation are the voices of the queer people who live there and who negotiate their identity on a daily basis.
Made by The NEST Collective, a Kenyan multidisciplinary collective, the film is based on an archive of stories from LGBT Kenyans. Shot in luminous black and white, these universal but specific vignettes give urgent voice to LGBT people who so rarely have the chance to represent themselves.
