Melissa Renwick is a staff photographer at the Toronto Star covering documentary, investigative and daily assignments. She was recently honoured by being named Photojournalist of the Year by the News Photographer’s Association of Canada.
She studied journalism amidst the prairies in her hometown of Calgary before transitioning her focus to photography. This allowed her to combine her love of storytelling with images.
Melissa has tackled stories on domestic human trafficking, the daily struggles of Cubans trying to make a better life in their home country and refugee families laying down their roots in Canada. Passionate about her work as a social documentarian, Melissa looks to capture the quiet, intimate moments of her subjects in order to catapult her audience into their lives. Her exploration of the human condition aims to reshape, question and critique public attitude.
